Mesenchymal stem or stromal cells (MSCs) represent a heterogeneous population of stromal cells that have self-renewal ability and multipotent differentiation potential. The presence of non-hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow was first proposed by Cohnheim about 150 years ago; who demonstrated the origination of wound-repairing cells from the distal bloodstream.
