Osteoporosis and low bone mineral density (BMD) affect more than 55 million people in the U.S. and Canada. These conditions are responsible for over two million fragility fractures and approximately $20 billion in related costs every year. Osteoporotic hip fractures are of particular concern, as over 300,000 occur yearly in the U.S., leading to 31,000 associated deaths, and disabling half of those who survive.
