What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Every time we make leg movements, it is aided by the Achilles tendon, which connects the heel bone and the calf muscles. Under extreme physical exercise, people often experience pain caused by the inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This condition is called Achilles Tendonitis.

They are two types; the insertional Achilles tendonitis and the non-insertional Achilles tendonitis. The first affects the low part of the heel and the tendon attachment. The second category affects the fibers in the tendon and mostly affects active young people.

Causes & Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis

Too much physical activity like running, walking and jumping is the primary cause of Achilles tendonitis. This is why it affects athletes mainly.

Other non-physical related issues have also been known to cause the condition. Rheumatoid arthritis and infection have both been linked to Achilles tendonitis. Because osteoarthritis also causes several joint problems, it is also associated with the condition.

The following are, however, the main reasons:

  • Getting into physical activity without warming up

  • Repeated exercise, which strains the calf muscles

  • Quick changes during activities like tennis, basketball, volleyball among others

  • Osteoarthritis in the heel

  • Tight and unfitting shoes

  • Walking with high heeled shoes for long

  • Bone spurs in the back of the heels also causes the condition

  • Old age weakens the Achilles tendon causing the condition

Symptoms include:

  • Inflammation at back of your heel

  • Calf muscles being tight

  • Being unable to flex your feet past a certain point

  • Touch sensitive heel skin

Treatments

The PRP Achilles Tendonitis Treatment

One of the ways used to treat Achilles tendonitis is through an injection that multiplies platelets, which are activated to produce cytokines and growth granules that help in healing. This method of treatment is called the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment.

The Platelet Rich Plasma method is, however, not as effective as stem cell therapy for treatment realized by some physicians. It is only done because patients treated using prp method show definite improvements.
